Research students will automatically receive an email from the University with instructions on how to book their degree ceremony once they have been granted Leave to Supplicate. If you do not receive an invitation within a week of receiving your Leave to Supplicate, please contact the Development Office on

Once you have registered for a degree ceremony, the College will organise your graduation. The ceremonies typically take place at 11 am or 2.30 pm; if you are graduating in absence (in absentia), you will receive your degree by post shortly after the degree ceremony. Please make sure that your contact details on the Student Self Service system are up to date in order to receive the degree certificate at the correct address. If you would like your degree certificate to be posted to a different address, please email us at and we will make sure that it is sent to the address you want.

For those graduating in person, the College organises each aspect (registration, gown hire, photography and celebration lunch). You will be sent an email approximately 2 months prior to your graduation with further information about how to book these individual items, which you must reply to in order to graduate. Students are allowed a maximum of 2 guests at the ceremony – unfortunately we are rarely able to offer any additional tickets.  Please note that the University does not allow children under the age of 7 to attend the ceremony. However, the College organises a live stream of the ceremony for any guests that are unable to access the Sheldonian Theatre.

Make sure to submit a hard copy and a digital copy of your thesis at least 5 days before the ceremony. You will not be able to graduate if you fail to submit these. Please note that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the requirement to submit a hard copy of your thesis prior to degree conferral has been suspended. Please contact the Development Office for further details.

The College also organises a three-course lunch for you and up to five guests in either the Hall or a specially hired Marquee.  You will be asked to register your attendance in advance, supplying the names of any guest attending the lunch as well as any access or dietary requirements that anyone in your party may have. If your guests or any of their requirements change, it is imperative that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can change the seating plan and inform our Catering team.  Please note that while lunch for graduands is complimentary, the College charges £25 per guest and requires you to pay for them in advance, (instructions will be included in the email.)  Once again, spaces are limited, so we highly recommend that you register your attendance and access or dietary requirements as early as possible.
