Research students will automatically receive an email from the University with instructions on how to book their degree ceremony once they have been granted leave to supplicate. If you do not receive an invitation at this time, please contact the Degree Ceremonies team.

Once you have registered for a degree ceremony, the College will organise your graduation. The ceremonies usually take place either at 11 am, 2.30 pm or 4.30 pm; if you are graduating in absence (in absentia), you will receive your degree by post shortly after the degree ceremony. Please, make sure that your contact details on the Student Self Service system are up to date in order to receive the degree certificate at the correct address. If you would like your degree certificate to be posted to a different address, please email us at and we will make sure that it is sent to the address you want.

For those graduating in person, the College organises each aspect (registration, gown hire, photography and celebration lunch). You will be sent an email 2 months prior to your graduation with further information about how to book these individual items, which you must reply in order to graduate. Students are allowed a maximum of 2 guests at the ceremony – we are not able to offer any additional tickets.  Please, note that the University does not allow children under the age of 7 to attend the ceremony. The College, however, organises a live stream of the ceremony for any guests that are unable to attend the ceremony.

Make sure to submit a hard copy and a digital copy of your thesis to the Bodleian at least 5 days before the ceremony. You may not be able to graduate if you fail to do this.

The College also organises a three-course lunch for you and your guests in either the Hall or the Marquee. You will be asked to register your attendance and supply the names of any guest attending the lunch as well as any access or dietary requirements that anyone in your party may have in the email sent to you by the College. If your guests themselves, or any of their requirements change, it is imperative that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can change the table plan and inform our catering team.  Please, note that while your lunch is complimentary the College charges £25 per guest and requires you to pay for them in advance, (instructions will be included in the email.)  Once again, spaces are limited, so we highly recommend that you register your attendance and access or dietary requirements as early as possible.
