Law

My name is Raphaël Grenier-Benoit, and I am a DPhil student in law at Balliol. I’m originally from Montreal, in Canada. In the context of my research, I look at how judges should make decisions and seek to articulate a theory of constitutional adjudication. For my Pathfinder project, I will seek to meet legal actors across Asia to gain a better sense of how the issues I work on play out in different political systems, and will ultimately try to publish pieces intended for a broader audience that will allow me to share some of the insights I will have gathered with the public at large. I’m thrilled at the prospect of making a transformative trip across Asia and meeting other members of the Balliol community. I also look forward to discovering new ways of seeing things and going beyond received ideas. Culture playing a central role in my life, I’m excited at the thought of immersing myself in the artistic scene and the history of the areas I will be visiting. I’m incredibly grateful to the William Westerman Pathfinders Programme for offering me this wonderful opportunity, and look forward to meeting other members of the Pathfinder community.
