Economics

Hello! My name’s Sarah and I will graduate with an MPhil in Economics this summer, having finished my undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 2020. I’m going to be undertaking a project investigating the role of Tenants Unions and collective action in the rental sector in the USA. I am interested in how these groups have pushed for reform on tenants’ rights, what strategies have and haven’t worked, and what lessons can be learnt for similar movements in Europe where housing crises are intensifying. To do this I am planning on visiting New England before travelling through the mid-West and ending in Chicago, meeting with organisers and tenants along the way. I have loved my time at Balliol and have gotten involved in volunteering with homelessness charities, environmental campaigning such as the campaign for the college to divest its holdings from fossil fuels, and held committee positions with the Irish society. I am very excited to get the opportunity to meet Old Members and spend the summer exploring North America!
