English Literature & Language

Hello! My name’s Isabel and I’m a finalist studying English Language and Literature. I’m going to be doing a film-focused project, looking at independent filmmakers in the USA and Canada and the content they produce. As an aspiring filmmaker, I’m naturally drawn to the creative buzz of the USA, particularly Hollywood and New York, but I’m also really interested in the decentralisation of the industry which is taking place through increasingly affordable methods of capturing high-quality video. I’ll be making a mini-documentary specifically about people who bring narratives to the screen from the immediate communities that they live in: why are these issues so important to them to justify such high-risk ventures? I’ve loved Balliol, and have been very involved with the drama scene here – I was Design Officer for the Pilch last year, and have directed several plays there. I’ve also directed some short films and trailers in my time here. I loved chatting to alumni whilst working on the Telethon campaign, and can’t wait to travel to America and meet many more.
