Chemistry

Hey! I’m Vignesh and I am in my final year of studying Chemistry. I’ve really enjoyed the past 4 years at Balliol, and am especially appreciative of the way the College and its community have encouraged and enabled me to pursue interests outside of my degree. For example, during my time here, I’ve been involved with various aspects of College life – I’ve served on JCR Committee as Ethnic Minorities Officer and Housing Officer, played squash for the Balliol team, and trained to be become a Peer Supporter to assist the welfare team. I’ve also been involved with student organisations outside of the College, such as the Oxford Climate Justice Campaign and the Oxford Psychedelic Society.

I am excited to use my Pathfinders award to travel through North America and explore my project, which focuses on the effects of drug legalisation across various parts the continent. The topic of drug legalisation is often portrayed in popular media rather simplistically, either as a spectacular success or as an astounding failure. I am keen to meet people who have opinions on either side of this divide, as well as those whose views lie somewhere in between. I also look forward to connecting with Old Members during the trip, and reflecting with them about our experiences at Balliol.
