Hello! My name is Tallulah, I am originally from a small town in Northern California near San Francisco. I am beyond excited to explore as much of the continent as possible, and meet and connect with Balliol alumni along the way.

My project centres on the increasing globalisation of the Asian cosmetics space, in particular in hair and skincare. I hope to explore how regional, communal, and familial beauty traditions and practices are translated into global markets; specifically, I am interested in the implications that this can have for the communities and cultures where these practices originate, as well as the makeup (pardon the pun) and politics of the beauty space itself. Does the increasing diversity of markets everywhere signal that they are becoming more democratic? Or will the totalising impulses of trends in the modern era mean that cosmetics industries – despite the appearance of diversity – will become increasingly homogenous (i.e., that drugstores and corner stores, once teeming with products specialised to regional beauty cultures, ingredients, and traditions, will begin to look the same from San Francisco to São Paulo to Seoul)?

I have loved my time at Balliol, and am massively looking forward to connecting with other international alumni and getting to explore your beautiful countries!
