Hi! I’m Phoebe, a fourth-year finalist studying Classics, and I’ve truly adored my time here at Balliol. It’s been a delight to contribute to college life as JCR Ethnic Minority Officer, as an Outreach Ambassador, and continually as a jazz musician, having performed at every possible Balliol Ball or Garden Party, and at multiple BCMS concerts/alumni events. Beyond Balliol, I am the President of the Oxford University Jazz Orchestra, and have thoroughly enjoyed being a Proofreader for the Alexandria Classics Journal.

I cherish the memories and friendships I’ve made over the past four years, and now, to receive the special honour of the Pathfinders Award is the cherry on the cake. To deepen my appreciation of the numerous and unique places I wish to visit, I’ll undertake a project that explores how jazz, a musical form of improvisatory nature, has been adapted across East Asia. Inspired by the oral transmission of epic poetry, I then aim to use jazz as a framework for understanding how musical practices within these communities contribute to the inheritance of cultural memory.

I cannot wait for my debut trip to Asia and to exchange stories with fellow Balliolites along the way; and I’m immensely thankful to everyone who made this opportunity a reality.

Register to host Westerman Pathfinders for the summer
