Hi there! My name is Oli and I'm in my final year studying for the Masters in Mathematics. This summer I will be travelling to North America and I cannot wait to meet some of the fantastic Balliol alumni across the pond!

I have made some incredible memories here at Balliol and feel very fortunate for the opportunities being a Balliolite has given me. As a keen sportsman, being able to captain Balliol's basketball team and play for BCFC alongside my studies has been immensely fun and rewarding (I still haven't won a Cuppers trophy though, this might be the year!). I had a hilarious time playing the recorder and flute in the Balliol Charity Musical during my second year, and I also represented Balliol as a player for Oxford Basketball Club in my second and third year.

I am a very outdoorsy person and am thoroughly looking forward to exploring the vast nature in Canada and the US (and so I can tick off hiking up Half Dome off my bucket list!). I have also jumped aboard the AI hype train, and consequently for my project I plan on investigating the unfortunate bias that is prevalent in many of the recently popular AI models like ChatGPT. These models often produce discriminatory responses that are harmful and perpetuate stereotypes. I would like to explore the causes for such behaviour along with investigating how tech firms are attempting to mitigate this bias.

I am hugely thankful to the Pathfinders fund for granting me the opportunity to travel while pursuing a project I am passionate about, and am greatly looking forward to meeting Balliol alumni along the way.

Register to host Westerman Pathfinders for the summer
