2020 Biology Hi, my name is Molly and I’m finishing my integrated Masters degree in Biology. My four years at Balliol have been a complex and formative personal journey, and I’ve certainly had a broad range of experiences in the college, from rowing in the first eight in Torpids to designing and hand-making Vivienne Westwood-inspired gowns for the inaugural Oxford Fashion Gala. I’ve also fundraised for student support and hardship bursaries with the Telethon calling campaigns! My proposed project marries a deep interest in hand-crafting with philosophical interests in 'self-sufficiency'. Initially inspired by Thoreau's Walden and Whitman's nature poetry, I hope to bring together a range of different concepts - homesteading, the 'prepper' movement, urban gardening, the 'diy scene', textile crafting and more - to explore what modern self-sufficiency movements look like. I'm excited to meet Balliol alumni, to expand my horizons and see the US!
