2020 Intellectual History Hello! I’m George, an MSt student in Intellectual History and 2025 Pathfinder to Asia. I first arrived at Balliol as a History and Politics undergraduate, and quickly decided to return for more. While here, I have immensely enjoyed the quirks which make Balliol life so rich: my time as John de Balliol and JCR Entz Rep; A&B nights; the Balliol Music Society’s Sunday concerts; the Pantomime. Much of my degree has been spent thinking about religion’s role in shaping political thought, identities and institutions. Recent elections around the world suggest its enduring importance. My Pathfinder project will explore the connections between popular religion and politics. In terms of both religions and political systems, East and Southeast Asia are fascinating for their heterogeneity. I will visit holy sites and landmarks, talking to everyone I can along the way: worshippers, journalists, officials, academics, passers-by. I have benefited greatly from being part of the wonderful Balliol community, and I am beyond excited to explore Asia, meet alumni there, and exchange stories about College and the wider world.
