Philosophy

Hello! My name is Becky and I’m in my final year of a master’s in philosophy at Balliol, following my undergraduate in PPE at Balliol. I have loved getting stuck into college life, whether that be frantically organising a musical as the JCR Charity Representative or hosting talks for Balliol’s PPE society. Outside of college, I’ve been very involved in student journalism, the international development society, and playing electric guitar in a funk band. This summer, I’m hoping to combine my interests in photography and journalism by undertaking a photojournalism project focusing on the changing nature of US workplaces. Since the pandemic began, there has been a huge shift towards working-from-home, millions of Americans have lost their jobs, and many more have quit in the so-called ‘Great Resignation’. I will be talking to a diverse range of people about how their attitude towards work has changed since the pandemic began, as well as photographing a wide range of workplaces to upload to a blog. Along the way, I will also attend related exhibitions, such as the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition on how machines changed human labour. I can’t wait to meet Old Members and explore North America this summer!
