I can say with confidence that the generous support of donors has made the past four years at Balliol possible for me – and a true privilege.
Like all Modern Languages students, I had to spend my third year abroad. I studied French, so I spent my year abroad studying in Paris and completing a translation internship in Lyon. This year was crucial for my academic development, and for gaining a more profound understanding of the French language and culture. Your generous support sustained me throughout this year and covered the cost of visas, travel and much-needed resources. This support allowed me to fully engage with both my academic studies and translation internship, without the worry of financial pressures.
The generosity of Old Members and friends like you also allowed me to carry out archival research in the BnF (‘Bibliothèque national de France’) for my dissertation in my fourth year. Not only did this complement and build upon my current studies, but it offered a very welcome and enjoyable insight into research, inspiring me to continue my studies at postgraduate level. None of this would have been possible without your support.
Your support has afforded me opportunities which I have relished and will cherish for years to come. Thank you.Charles West2021, Modern Languages (French)
