Oxford Railway Station closures
Network Rail have announced the planned closure of the Oxford Railway Station on a number of weekends in September and October, which will affect the following weekends:
No train services will be running to or from Oxford Station on these days.
From the Network Rail webpage:
‘Buses will replace trains between Didcot Parkway, Oxford and Hanborough. Buses will also run between Banbury, Oxford and Didcot Parkway for CrossCountry customers, plus Oxford and Oxford Parkway for Chiltern Railways customers.
Further details of the bus services that will be provided over the four weekends will be announced over the coming weeks. Please visit Great Western Railway for additional information.’
Whilst trains to Oxford Parkway Station and other forms of transport such as buses and the park and ride services will be running, they are likely to be busier and potentially disrupted due to the closure of Oxford Station, so we recommend planning your journey carefully and in advance.
To assist with your travel plans, we have put together a guide below which will give you an idea of the best ways to access Oxford, and what to expect when planning your journey.
Oxford Parkway Station
Oxford Parkway Station is located to the North of the City. It is regularly served by trains from London Marylebone. There are frequent bus services from Oxford Parkway to the City Centre, which take around 25 minutes to reach central Oxford. Additionally, rail replacement bus services connecting Oxford Parkway Station to Oxford Station will be in operation during the closure period. Full details of onward connections from Oxford Parkway can be found here.
Getting the bus to Oxford
The Oxford Tube bus service runs from London to Oxford Bus Station 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. From Oxford Bus Station, is it around a 5–7-minute walk to Balliol. Full details of the service and timetables can be found at oxfordtube.com
There are many other coach services which run from various cities to Oxford Bus Station, including the X5 from Cambridge. You can also visit the National Express website for other coach routes to Oxford.
Driving to Oxford
We do not recommend driving into the centre of Oxford. The city centre is likely to be very busy, and there will be congestion. Instead, we suggest parking at one of the Park and Ride sites around the city. There are regular bus services which run between these sites and the centre of Oxford.
If you have a Blue Badge and require parking in the city centre, there are a limited number of Blue Badge spaces available on Broad Street. Please be aware that we are not able to guarantee that these will be available at your time of arrival.
You can find other car parks that offer Blue Badge parking, and overnight parking on the Oxford City Council website.
Please note that parking is not available in College.
