The Younger Society Dinner

Saturday 1 December 2018

Balliol lawyers are warmly invited to attend the annual Younger Society Dinner at Balliol College.

About the Speaker

Our speaker this year is Right Honourable Lord Hoffmann, PC, GBS, former Second Senior Lord of Appeal in Ordinary.

One of the most important and influential English jurists, Lord Leonard Hoffmann was born in South Africa. He then came to Oxford to complete the BCL on a Rhodes Scholarship. He won the Vinerian scholarship and became an Oxford Fellow until 1963. Called to the bar in 1964, he took silk in 1977. From then on his judicial career has been sterling, sitting on the Court of Appeal for Jersey and Guernsey (1980-85), the Chancery Division of the High Court (1985-92), the Court of Appeal of England and Wales (1992-95), and the House of Lords (1995-2009), in addition to being on the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal since 1998. Renowned for his willingness to break with convention, Lord Hoffmann’s judgements have had outsized impact in company law, contract law, human rights, and intellectual property law, amongst others. In 2009, he's returned to Oxford as a Visiting Professor, continuing his contributions to law with his creativity and clarity.
