The tutorial system is a crucial element of what makes an Oxford education so special. The opportunity to experience intensive tutoring in pairs or small groups, with detailed scrutiny of one’s work by an eminent academic, can have an impact that lasts a lifetime.

There is no disguising, however, that the tutorial system is expensive to operate.  Even under the new fee regime, student fees and government funding cover only around half of the cost of an undergraduate’s education at Oxford, the problem being most acute in science subjects.  The remainder is subsidised by income from University and College endowments.

Given the current economic climate, it is more important than ever that the College can continue to fund the tutorial system, independently of cuts in government funding. This appeal seeks to do just that by endowing in perpetuity the Fellowship in Inorganic Chemistry at Jesus College, and thereby ensuring that the College continues to support three Fellowships in Chemistry.
