Explanation of tax benefits

Inheritance tax

Jesus College is a registered charity (no.1137435). This means that any gift you make to the College in your Will will be deducted from your estate before it is assessed for Inheritance Tax.  The rate of inheritance tax is currently 40% and executors need to pay this level of tax on assets above the threshold of £325,000 for an individual or £650,000 for married couples and civil partners (in 2012/13 tax year).

Changes to Inheritance Tax in 2012

In April 2012, a reduced rate of Inheritance Tax of 36% was introduced, for estates leaving a legacy to charity. If you leave 10 per cent or more of your estate to charity, then the government will take 10 per cent off your Inheritance Tax rate. No beneficiaries will be better off, just the charities.

Deed of Variation

A Deed of Variation can be used if you are a beneficiary of a Will and would prefer to reduce inheritance tax liabilities flowing from the testator’s death by making a charitable donation.  To find out more about Deeds of Variation, please contact your legal adviser.
