Jesus College Shakespeare Project:
The Taming of the Shrew
"I come to wive it wealthily in Padua;
If wealthily, then happily in Padua."
(Act 1, scene 2)
Katherine, the strong-willed elder daughter of Baptista Minola, a wealthy Paduan merchant, is vilified by all as a "shrew", whilst her sister Bianca is courted by many suitors keen to be the beneficiary of her father's wealth. However, when Baptista decrees that Bianca can only get married when a husband is found for Katherine, all seems to be lost for Bianca's suitors. Enter a(nother) young gentleman from Verona...
Following the very well-received opening productions of The Comedy of Errors and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, we complete the trilogy of early comedies that form the first year of the Jesus College Shakespeare Project with Shakespeare's (in)famous comedy of the battle of the sexes. Performed in Hall in front of the portrait of Elizabeth I, the project showcases the talent of some of the best student actors in a production that is presented for audiences of both alumni and schoolchildren as part of our Access and Outreach programme.
The afternoon begins at 1.30pm with tea and coffee, before the performance at 2.00pm, lasting roughly 90 minutes. There will then be an opportunity for tea and cake, before a question and answer session with the cast and creative team. The event will end at 4.30pm.
Please note that the performance contains depictions of abusive relationships.
