Carpe Diem: Poems by Horace
An five week introductory course with Professor Armand D'Angour
*BOOKING IS NOW CLOSED*
Carpe Diem ('seize the day') is the best known phrase coined by the poet Horace (65-8 BC) in one of his roughly 100 short poems known as the Odes. The motto asks us to embrace the present and enjoy the moment. Horace was the greatest lyric poem of ancient Rome, whose versatile brilliance and humour captivate all who have read his poetry. This course will introduce some of the odes (in Armand's verse translations), indicating their layers of meaning, their cultural context, and their linguistic and poetic nuance, and seeking to illuminate them through close readings and group discussion.
