An Introduction to Latin Poetry: a course of six tutorials
*BOOKING FOR THIS COURSE HAS NOW CLOSED*
Unlike Greek literature (covered in last year's online course), where it was possible to cover 400 years and select both verse and prose, Latin literature flowed - and Latin poetry arguably peaked - in the course of a single century: the first century BC. Fellow in Classics, Professor Armand D'Angour has therefore selected the six most important Latin poets of that age, beginning with Catullus and ending with Ovid, to explore.
THE COURSE WILL COVER FIRST CENTURY LATIN POETRY, AS FOLLOWS:
Monday 6 February: Catullus - Shorter poems
Monday 13 February: Lucretius - Book 4
Monday 20 February: Virgil - Aeneid, Book 4
Monday 27 February: Horace - Satires, Book 1
Monday 6 March: Propertius - Book 1
Monday 13 March: Ovid - Ars Amatoria, Book 1
Professor D'Angour will provide digital copies of all the above to those who register, along with a more detailed description of the texts, secondary reading, and two questions to think about and discuss for each poet or text.
Each session will last 75 minutes, starting at 6pm, and they will be held on Zoom. The sessions will begin with a 15 minute introduction by Professor D'Angour, and then a general discussion.
The course is limited to 16 participants and will cost £200 for all six tutorials.
