Fellow and Tutor in Chemistry Kylie Vincent (left) has been appointed the University’s first Academic Champion for Women in Entrepreneurship. The new 2-year post supports innovation and entrepreneurship in the University's Strategic Plan 2018-2023, and is part of the IDEA (Increasing Diversity in Enterprising Activities) initiative – a University programme that aims to tackle challenges and inequalities faced by under-represented groups within industry and enterprise around the world. With researchers and colleagues from the University’s Department of Engineering Science and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, Suchandrima Das (right), Career Development Fellow in Engineering at Jesus, is a step closer to finding new radiation-resistant materials for the production of fusion power. With the potential to revolutionise the energy sector these advances in nuclear fusion reactor design bring this near-limitless energy source closer to becoming a clean and sustainable power source. Ben Guy, Teaching Associate in Anglo-Saxon History and Junior Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, and Angela Muir, Lecturer in British Social and Cultural History at the University of Leicester, are the joint winners of the Francis Jones Prize 2020, endowed in 2017 by Sir David Lewis, Honorary Fellow of Jesus College, to celebrate Welsh historical literature.
A new access collaboration between Jesus College and alumna Clare Williams (2005, English, right) aims to widen participation to under-represented and disadvantaged young people in south London. The Masterclass pilot programme invites academically talented Year 8 school students from ethnic minority backgrounds in three London schools to participate in a series of masterclasses that will equip them with skills to pursue higher education. 450th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
A special Giving Day (30 June - 1 July) marks the culmination of a range of 450th anniversary events during June. The Giving Day will provide opportunities to donate towards the 450th Anniversary Fund and support its three main fundraising priorities: the new Northgate building, Bursaries and Studentships, and Access and Outreach. The fifth item in the 12 Objects digital exhibition series is the Collected Works of James I from the College's Fellows’ Library. The library houses 11,500 volumes, with the oldest book printed a century before the College’s foundation; older manuscripts are deposited for safekeeping in the Bodleian. The personal libraries of five Principals are preserved in the Fellows’ Library, together with the printed ‘bookes in latine and greeke’ bequeathed by Edward, Lord Herbert of Cherbury. ALUMNI NEWS
With sadness we report the deaths of alumni Christopher John Burt (1961, PPE), Peter J Robertson (1971, Geography), and Honorary Fellow and former Engineering tutor, Clark Lannerdahl Brundin.
Restrictions permitting, College will host an All Alumni and Family Day on Saturday 24 July, the first all-alumni in-person event since March 2020. Activities suitable for both adults and children include specially tailored talks by College Fellows, a visit to Oxford’s Story Museum, and rowing training activities with members of Jesus College Boat Club. The next instalment in the ‘Celebrating the Elizabethan College’ series is The Global Stage of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries on Thursday 17 June.
