Regular donor to Student Support

Youssef Zitoun

I started contributing regularly to the Balliol refugee scholarship in my first year, as I was aware of the opportunity it would offer a potential recipient.

Most of us could not fathom the impact of having to flee your home and find a place in a new society. Given the basic privileges most of us are afforded, living in safety and relative certainty, I felt it an obligation to give towards such a great initiative. I know that most Balliol students feel the same, with over 80% of students choosing to support the refugee scholarship fund.

During my time at Balliol I worked as a telethon caller, which gave me the opportunity to speak to a wide range of Old Members, many of whom felt, like me, an obligation to support those Balliol students who need it the most. It gave me a real perspective on the breadth of the support, at all levels, which makes such a difference to students at Balliol. At the same time, I was able to see the difference that this support made to many of my friends, helping them to make the most of their time at Balliol.

Since graduating, I have maintained my regular support to Balliol, and I am proud to be a member of the 1263 Society. I believe that it is important my fellow Old Members do the same, to ensure that those who follow us have access to the same opportunities.
