‘Balliol has been and will remain my "green isle". I borrow, of course, from Percy Bysshe Shelley who brought me here. His unexpected "green isle" bobbed "in the deep wide sea of misery". He was having a bad time of it in Italy. Luckily, I am not as despairing as Shelley. So I’ll exchange "misery" for "mediocrity", or "mundanity". Forgive the extra syllables.
'I am deeply grateful to everyone at Balliol: the Master, Fellows, staff, students, and all whose generosity made my fellowship possible. My time here has been one of the most enjoyable and enchanted periods of my life: I taught our brilliant undergraduates; recorded a BBC documentary in the Massey Room; held a conference at which Balliol’s Sir Christopher Ricks spoke; almost finished that dreaded second book, and so much more. I made lifelong friends. I’ll never forget how each consilium sparkled with wit, memories, and cheerful dispute. A green, green isle...Thank you all dearly.’ Dr Bysshe Inigo Coffey (Early Career Fellow in English) |
