‘Being back at Balliol has brought on a cascade of emotions and memories. I had been prepared for changes in Oxford (it seems the crowds on Cornmarket are larger and Blackwell’s sells more coffee than books), but inside College things do not seem to have changed that much. In the SCR, academics talking of history, politics and literature are among the things I remember, but now I sense a tinge of contemporary concerns relating to the changing, challenging world around us. I am savouring all this and hope in my talks to engage on these issues.’
Dr Shashi Jayakumar (1997 and Oliver Smithies Visiting Lecturer)
