Tulips and wallflowers in the Fellows' Garden

‘I joined Balliol to such a warm welcome, and as spring unfurled herself about the College, revealing the gardeners’ magic. I am here to teach and continue my research into the reception history of Percy Bysshe Shelley, with whom I share a distant ancestor. It has got off to a good start. Among the Abinger Papers in the Bodleian, I discovered a memoir of the poet written by a young man who had known him during the Shelleys’ year at Marlow. Fit for the spring, I transcribed a list of Alpine seeds Shelley had brought back with him from his European travels. I have also been working on a documentary of the poet for BBC Radio 4 which will air in July. Balliol has made me feel immediately at home and I am delighted to be here.’
