December 2024

'Our annual Advent Service in the Chapel at the beginning of 8th Week was packed as usual with students and staff and their families. Our Chapel Choir provided a feast (complete with trumpets in the organ loft) of seasonal music. Among the carols, we sang one of my favourites, It came upon a Midnight Clear. It includes the line, "O hush thy noise, ye men of strife, And hear the angels sing". Whether you believe in angels or not, at the end of this past year in a world so full of strife, I am sure that we would all welcome some “hush” in 2025 to hear the voices of peace and kindness more loudly.

'Here in College, and across the University, we are enormously privileged to be given time and space (and some quiet!) to reflect on timeless and enduring values and to find solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. That is in large part due to the generous support of alumni like you over many generations. Thank you.

Whatever and wherever you are celebrating in this season, I wish you and your families a joyful time.'

Dame Helen Ghosh DCB, Master of Balliol
