A message from the Balliol Society Honorary Secretary:

Dear Members,

As the Secretary of the Balliol Society, I would like to invite you to attend the Balliol Society Weekend on Saturday 18 September 2021 . All former students are members of the Society, and this occasion is attended by alumni from all years.
The Balliol Society Weekend is primarily an opportunity to come back to Balliol, and enjoy meeting other Old Members and members of the College. It is always an important event in the College’s calendar, but that is especially so this year. After having been obliged to cancel the Weekend last year, it will be the first chance for all alumni to return to College.

Saturday 18 September
2.00pm – Those who would like to participate in a scratch choir are invited to rehearsal in the Chapel
3.00pm – Balliol Society AGM
4.00pm – Tea and Talk with the Master
5:00pm – Lecture given by Professor Seamus Perry, Professor of English Literature, Massey Fellow, Tutor in English, Fellow Librarian and Fellow for Charity Matters
6:15pm – Scratch Choir and service
7.00pm – Drinks reception
7.45pm – Dinner in Hall (Black Tie preferred)

Sunday 19 September
8.15-9.30am Breakfast in Hall
10:00-12:00 Rowing at the Boat Club
10:00-12:00 Library Exhibition at St Cross, 'Slavery in the Age of Revolution'

Costs
Day time events: free
Dinner and drinks reception for Old Members and their guests - £60 per person
Dinner and drinks reception for Young Alumni and their guests (Matric 2011 and after) - £30 per person
Single Bed & Breakfast accommodation - £55 per person per night

This year the University’s ‘Meeting Minds Alumni Weekend’ is taking place on-line. We have therefore taken advantage of the flexibility which this gives us to make some innovations in the structure of our events. We are pleased that Seamus Perry has agreed to give this year’s lecture, but please note also that we are going to provide an opportunity for a scratch choir to rehearse and perform in Chapel. On Sunday, there will be a chance for former rowers (and indeed others) to have a row at the Boat Club and the Library will open it's doors to the exhibition at St Cross. We hope that these innovations will add to the enjoyment of the weekend.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Balliol in September. Should you have any questions regards the event please feel free to contact me.

Best wishes,
Martin Conway
Fellow and Tutor in History
Secretary of the Balliol Society
