Professor Stapleton, Fellow in Law at Balliol from 1987 to 1997, is one of the most influential contemporary legal scholars. Her work on causation and legal reasoning has been cited by the highest courts across the common law world as well as by government bodies such as the Law Commission. Professor Stapleton is the only non-US recipient of the American Bar Association’s Robert McKay Law Professor Award which recognises outstanding contributions to tort and insurance law. She was awarded the John Fleming Prize in Tort Law, a biennial international award, amongst many other professional awards and honorary degrees. Most recently, she was the chosen speaker for the prestigious Clarendon Law Lectures (2018) series at Oxford University.
In addition to the usual festivities, this year's programme includes a pre-dinner Younger Society Moot and tea party to celebrate Professor Timothy Endicott's 20 years as a Fellow in Law at Balliol. You are all invited to join in the tradition of Younger Society mooting that goes back to the 1920s, and witness the forensic spectacle as a team of current students take on a team of distinguished alumni on a problem in Constitutional Law.
We have decided to trial a new guest policy this year. Each old member of the College is invited to bring a guest to the day's programme including the dinner. While we hope that this will make the dinner more appealing to alumni, we would be happy to receive feedback regarding this change, whether delivered over email or on the day of the event, and take this into account while planning for future years.
