News and updates from Balliol College

August 2017

'This summer in the Garden Quad I have displayed some of my collection of scented-leaved pelargoniums, a lesser known group of these well-loved garden plants. Some have pretty flowers but the aroma of the leaves when rubbed adds another dimension for the senses. These plants are the chameleons of the plant world when it comes to the scents they adopt – the leaves of one plant may smell of roses/Turkish delight (‘Attar of Roses’), another peppermint (P. tomentosum), another citrus lemon (‘Mabel Grey’), even Seville oranges (‘Orange Fizz’). Other leaves are more open to opinion and it is interesting to hear visitors search for words to describe an aroma. Is it citrus, is it pine, is it boot polish?'
