News and updates from Balliol College

August 2018

'The summer always brings challenges for the domestic team as we prepare College for a set of fresh students and put in hand refurbishments. We're about to start work on the fourth floor of Staircase XII, otherwise known as Dicey. We're also well underway with the top floor of South Wing at Holywell Manor, where we're adding a shower room and renovating the kitchen and bedrooms. In such old buildings we never know what secrets refurbishing will throw up as we peel back the years of paint (just today I discovered a piece of newspaper from 1965 stuffed into a wall cavity), but managing it is often one of the more enjoyable aspects of my role, especially as it gives me a great excuse to spend more time at the Manor and to take a lunch break in the peaceful garden.'
