'Freshers have a superpower they are scarcely aware of themselves: the expectation, energy, and eagerness they bring make even the most blasé or jaded of old-timers sit up and take notice. In short, by being themselves fresh, they refresh us. This is their special gift to universities, and in the UK it arrives just as the days shorten and the weather turns. What always strikes me is how quickly our Freshers integrate, moving from uncertain groups to individuals with purpose, disappearing into their studies and pursuits. It’s joyful to watch this transition, fulfilling once again the College’s purpose, and "ready to be loosed with all the power / That being changed can give". We welcome all our Freshers and thank them for the gifts they bring.'
